When I first heard the music and lyrics of مشروع ليلى Mashrou Leila at a club in downtown Beirut, I knew immediately that they would be the first home grown band to break out globally. With the launch of their third album, by way of their fans in an over subscribed crowd funding, they are mesmerizing audience at festivals and concerts around Europe. Their performance at the MidEastNow Festival in Florence was nothing less than spectacular keeping a typical sedate audience on their feet demanding 3 encores before they would let the boys go home. Even more impressive was the genuineness of the band itself who were visibly touched by their Florentine reception. Mashrou’ Leila (Arabic: مشروع ليلى sometimes transliterated as Mashrou3 Leila, meaning Leilas Project) is an Arab five-member alternative rock band. The band formed in Beirut, Lebanon in 2008 as a music workshop at the American University of Beirut. The band has released three studio albums, Mashrou Leila (2008), El Hal Romancy (2011), an EP, and Raasük (2013) while causing many controversies due to their satirical lyrics and themes.
