When I first ran the Gold Coast Airport Marathon in 2005 - it was my 9th marathon. There were only about a dozen Singaporeans & Malaysians combined at the start line, amongst them was Singapores elite Vivian Tang. For the next 8 years, the GCAM had been my annual pilgrimage marathon. In 2013, Jennifer Kinipela, Winnie Wong & myself were crazy enough to run the GCAM on 7 July & made a beeline to the airport to catch our flight to Birdsville, for the next-day start of The Big Red Run - a 250km event in the Simpson Desert. Unfortunately, I could not repeat this feat again this year as the events overlapped - I had to miss my 10th GCAM for The Big Red Run. At this years GCAM, there were more than 300 runners - just from SIngapore & possibily another couple of hundred from Malaysia. Team FatBird and Anthony Sum, have been instrumental in this increase of numbers, together with the hard work of Tourism Queenslands Lim Mui Khim. Air Asia X has been fielding a team at this GCAM for the past 5 years or so. Whats important is, as runners, we are the unofficial ambassadors of our countries, lets obey the laws of the countries we run in and let us fly our flags proudly.....
