When I first starting working in Nicaragua I was surprised by the use of modern cement stucco over the traditional earthen adobe. It seems this came to be because adobe homes were not traditionally plastered as you can see in the first photo. Then people began to see the cement stucco on modern cement block buildings and realized it could be a good solution for smoother and easier to clean surfaces in their adobe homes. Also there was a growing awareness of disease carried by insects that made their homes in the exposed crevices of the adobe. As you see in the 2nd photo it doesnt bond to the earth or have the ability to expand with the clay based bricks. One thing I enjoy teaching is how to take this beautiful soil- the same soil they make the adobe with- and turn it into beautiful protective plasters that dont compromise the integrity of the building (in all ways!) Its cheaper, easier, better for the environment, and I believe youll agree, more expressive and beautiful.
