When I get the chance to talk seriously about my work in the studio, I often describe each painting as a door, and the work relating to it as a rite of passage, a series of steps made of choices and agreements. Each painting requires a personal journey and transformation, making each picture an initiation into a new life with new awareness. “The mind of a painter must be like a mirror…,” wrote Leonardo. I like to think that an artist vicariously sees and creates on behalf of the audience as well, offering the completed work as a record of the experience, accessible by degree, according to the viewer’s preparation. p 250, TTT
