When I heard that King wrote a follow up to his classic, The - TopicsExpress

When I heard that King wrote a follow up to his classic, The Shining, I was nonplussed. The Shining wasnt one one of my favorite books of his but thanks to the movie, its etched pretty vividly in my psyche. Kubricks take, however, is only loosely based on the book and the more faithful TV miniseries was just awful. The big news that Doctor Sleep would continue Danny Torrences story was interesting to me but I had no intention of reading it. In fact, I had grown apart from my former favorite author since laboring through his 2010 book of short stories Full Dark No Stars. Not that it was bad, I was just on a different mind set. I would have continued on this path had a coworker, who noticed I liked to read on my lunch break, plopped the book on my lap one day and told me I should read it. I thought it was a nice gesture, so I figured I would at least attempt to read it out of duty. I figured that I hadnt read the original (or even seen the movie) for over 20 years so I was ready to be either bored, lost or both. I can tell you, dear readers, that this book gripped me within a few pages, and didnt let go throughout. Its a surprisingly short book for King but he makes every page count. I was sucked back into the life of Danny Torrance and I feel like I would have enjoyed the book without having read The Shining or knowing anything about it. Its an easy read and I highly recommend it to my avid reader friends.
