When I joined Medical College in 1983, the first sight that greeted me was an open air garbage vat beside the 1st gate. The stench was nauseating. Imagine my surprise when on 29th Jan, 2014, I went for the reunion, the vat was still in its pristine, unsullied glory. S Wajed Ali if alive would have written - sei tradition somane cholchhe! But this is a tradition we can probably do without. Apart from the aesthetic aspects, an open air vat can be a big source of infection for hospital patients. I wonder whose unfeeling callousness has led to its continued existence. Can anything be done in this era of Paribartan ?
