When I lived in Nicaragua I lived next to, and grew very close to a family of 8. The eldest, was 14 year old Raquel. Raquel was responsible for taking care of all the children, her handicapped mother, the household duties, all while going to school. She longed to escape her reality and dreamt of becoming a doctor. I promised to help this dream come true. Soon after I left, she met a boy who offered to take her away from her grim home life. She followed. Desperate for love and another reality, she moved in with him without finishing high school. Unfortunately this story is not uncommon....this is how the cycle of poverty and patriarchy continues. However, Raquel is a smart girl eager to break her families patterns of birthing children and selling $.05 tortillas. At her own volition, she is back in night school finishing her high school degree. With your help can still make her dream of going to college come true. My friend Leah Samuels has started this indigogo to get Raquel in school. The costs are but a fraction of what we spend here on frivolity. $500/yr for a college education! I know times are tight for many of us, but this is a way for your $ to have a direct impact on a beautiful life that is so close to my heart. Please contact me if you have any questions regarding this cause...
