When I lived in Oklahoma I would order seed and hatchery catalogs - TopicsExpress

When I lived in Oklahoma I would order seed and hatchery catalogs and spend hours looking over them, waiting for the day that I could move home or buy land so I could start my steps toward self sufficiency. One thing that always intimidated me was that most large hatcheries had a minimum order of 25 chicks. I thought "Good grief I could never have that many chicks" (the irony here is currently I have 30!!) so I was intimidated and put off by that. Or I would go to a farm store that had chicks and no one would really be able to tell me what I needed to make them thrive. Again, being a newbie, I was intimidated that Fast forward to this year. For all the ills that Facebook has, it has been a wonderful tool to network with people. I said I was interested in chickens and before too long a friend of mine contacted me because her daughter shows chickens in 4H. She had known what a year I had and was more that willing to help me get a start. She was able to help me get set up to be successful brooding my chicks and also gave me tons of resources to look things up. If any one knows me well, they know I am an information sponge and will read anything and everything I can to learn more about what ever interests me. Then through Facebook I have been able to connect with other people who raise poultry and now i have a great little "go to " network I can ask questions of, learn things from and generally build friendships. The result was instead of the same ol same ol chickens I have some wonderfully beautiful and well bred animals, people I can ask when I need advice or help and am building a network of like minded people. I have done the same when it comes to my horses, cattle and farm life in general. Or at least I have tried to. supporting local and small livestock breeders is just as important as supporting the local food movement. In fact is is kind the same just more of the foundation side of it rather than the results. So I guess what I am saying is if you get ready to take the plunge into some kind of livestock, before you head off to hte salebarn, or the big box farm store or pick up a hatchery catalog, look right under your nose! The most amazing things might be in your own neighborhood, county or state!
