When I moved back to Australia in 1999 for university, I finally got to listen to Triple J. A youth oriented national radio station, that had shaped the pop cultural landscape in Australia for my peers, and gave me an incredible and happy learning experience. As I got older, I noticed a few things :: I started listening to JJJ less. My friends bemoaned that the music wasnt the way it was. Things we held dear changed -- Michael Tunn and Merick and Rosso moved on. The request fest changed its name. Adam Spencer was joined by this Wil Anderson guy who couldnt stop laughing at his own jokes for like 2 years straight... Something wasnt right. By the time I was 25, almost everyone I know in my age group had stopped listening to JJJ. That was around the time I started broadcasting with community radio. And learning what station demographics were. And learning that I didnt like JJJ as much anymore, because it didnt want me to. It wasnt for me anymore. It was for the next generation. And with that frame in mind, I chose to only flip it to JJJ for a few reasons -- Haus excellent Hip Hop show, Sunday nights extraordinary Frequency Lab with Fenella Kernabone, the occasional live at the wireless. But I would also quite happily, once every three months, have a week of just listening to it as my primary station - the music never repeated itself too much, and actually, when hearing all the songs for the first time, it is quite enjoyable. Sure the young presenters gave me the shits, and there was always too much acceptance of the Cat Empire and electro-indie, and the songs were more poppy... But dude.. Its not for you any more, dont get mad, just revel that they actually know what they are doing. As if to wrap up my long relationship with JJJ, the amazing Helen Razer has written this. Hopefully you can read it, if you care. Because she might just change your mind about what is wrong with JJJ. What about you? When did you listen to JJJ? Do you still? What did you love about it? Is Razer right as to where it should go?
