When I moved to New England and worked in Boston, I changed my hair (cut the big Farrah hair off), lost the hot pink lipstick, short skirts, and high heels. I started going by Susan (my birth name) rather than Susie (the name folks in Louisiana prefer to call me), I stopped saying folks, and I even changed my tone of voice, lowered it a couple of octaves and stopped calling everyone Maam and Sir. THAT maneuver was a huge reason I was able to build relationships with some very powerful people. I did not change my heart, however which is why I built relationships with some very special people too. Lower voices are perceived as more competent -- but lowering your voice creates vocal fry, which is perceived as untrustworthy. Read more: n.pr/1sheENP
