When I pick up a gaiwan, I hold it by putting one finger atop the lid and two fingers around the saucer that the cup part sits on (you can see me doing this in the cover photo). This way I can pour without ever touching the cup part of it, which can become extremely hot as tea is brewing in it. This method is pretty uncommon and most people pick it up without the saucer, just holding the edges of the cup between two fingers and steadying the lid with another. It takes a lot of skill to do this without dropping it or burning your fingers. I decided to try this style today. NEVER AGAIN. D: Thats all I have to say. Haha. I was not able to do this well. Way too hot and the grip made my hand shaky. I felt like I was going to drop it and destroy my precious gaiwan. At least theres a way that works for old shakey-paws here. :P
