When I played this gig with Julia many years ago it was glorious! Everyone was so very, very happy to hear her full-throated appeal to the silent majority. Today, in 2014 Im still asking Win al Malayin??? “This is Lebanon” is the horrifying mantra that has infected minds young and old. “This is Lebanon” is why the 20 tons of water is still threatening to bring down our building event after the Lebanese Government ordered it’s immediate removal over ten years ago. “This is Lebanon” is why my family is still outside any legal framework void of any meaningful status. Win al Malayin??? Where are the millions? They are all busy repeating their National Mantra over and over and over “This is Lebanon” To those that hope to give up their Lebanese Nationality in exchange for another …and there are a great many who have sung this lovely song, here is my response to their suggestion that living in Lebanon with no rights is cool if you are not from a poor country: I live in this spot. This is my Lebanon. I will do my best to right the wrongs in this spot where I have lived the best years of my life, as should the other 110,000 US passport holders who live here. Until I share every right that every single long term resident, civil servant, husband of a Lebanese woman, professional offering immeasurable contribution over decades, father of a Child Born in Beirut...I will stand firm, stand tall and hold Lebanon and Lebanese to account. In a sea of mouths sewn shut one voice carries very far indeed.
