When I post a picture on my page of a piece im giving everyone a chance to get it before I take it to a consignment dealer. Where the price will increase because of the percentage breakdown. The shop gets theirs for selling it and having it there on display. Space in a shop costs money otherwise the shop wouldnt make any money and would suffer. So when I take a piece down that I have valued at 100 dollars the painting. Probably has 8-10 working hrs to produce it at 10 bucks an hr. Then I have to factor in the cost of the material canvas paint etc which is roughly 25 bucks in this instance. Gas to deliver the piece another 10 bucks. Then the 25-35% to be paid to the consignment shop. So a 100 dollar painting easily reaches 175 - 200. Im not banking alot of money in fact since only 30% of what I produce actually sells it ends up costing me more than what I make. So I frequently as im sure alot of artists do underprice our work just to keep it moving. This is also why actual commission pieces seem kinda high when ur given a quote. Were not being greedy but quoting u what it actually costs to produce the piece and make it modestly proffitable. Photography is the same way when u purchase prints at 100 bucks. Hopefully that helps everyone understand why like today I threw up several works at reasonable prices.
