When I read earlier today about a young mother who accidentally killed herself by falling asleep in her running car, I immediately thought of this. The women who died worked at 3 part-time jobs, and was trying to take a nap before starting her next shift at a Dunkin Donuts. Evidently, instead of giving her full-time hours at one location, DD instead made her work at three different franchises. My guess would be that they did that to get out of having to provide her with benefits. A sad story, but the circumstances that led to her death are certainly not unique. A normal human being would react to this with horror and shame over the fact that our economic system forces workers into situations like this one. But, for our political leaders learning that someone is working 3 jobs to survive is apparently cause for celebration. I dont think that the woman in the video told President Bush about her multiple jobs to find herself patted on the back by him. My guess would be she was hoping he would tell her that it was wrong that she was forced to struggle that way simply to survive. Boy, she couldnt have been more wrong.
