(When I say Saudi Arabia, I am not talking about the holy land but the bloody kings.) Let me tell you how(I think) they developed their insecurities. Turks were ruling Hijaz and with help Al Saud managed to take over the country and renamed it Saudi Arabia (I think people who buy special number plates for their cars are insecure but renaming the whole country... ) They have always lagged behind when it comes to Turks who were great at managing stuff, the Persians who were great scholars with intellect and spirituality. Mughal empire in Subcontinent, they were rich, they had rich culture and they had rich traditions. Egypt has strong historical background in terms of philosophers, scholars, scientists. When we talk about golden era of Muslims that era does not include SA. Saudi Arabia became rich post 1935. Bahawalpur is district of Punjab Pakistan. The nawab of Bahawalpur was so rich when he went to perform Hajj in SA. He took his car with him. After performing hajj, he went to meet with SA king and the king just said, you have a nice car. The nawab gifted that car to SA. SA is showing all the signs of "recently rich". They cannot see anyone else developing because that will undermine their authority. The only thing SA has right now is oil and money. If they loose that they have nothing to offer to the world. The way gulf is developing their cities without thinking. They are trying to emulate New York and LA without thinking, cities develop over time not over night. They are not spending any money on development of their culture. They are not spending anything on development of human resource. People from West go and manage their companies and people from third world come and do rest of the work. They have simply nothing to share with this world apart from oil. Uruguay, was booming at one point in history. However, their economic model was exactly like SA. When World found cheaper means, you know where uruguay is now. I predict similar fate for SA King.
