When I see videos like this of police using a heavy hand under the color of law when interacting with citizens, I’m reminded of a quote from Atlas Shrugged: “There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.” The US government has turned every petty infraction into an arrestable offense, giving police and prosecutors total leeway to charge anyone with anything for any reason, and they face no repercussions for filing such false charges. Meanwhile, the victims they pile charges against must spend their entire life savings to defend themselves from the state in the state’s own courts, with the entire system rigged against them. It happens in every city, county and state in the USA hundreds of times a day. The only defense we have against it is to video every encounter as a record of what really happened between the parties for use in court. Someone should make out cards for citizens to use to inform officers of their rights while being recorded for uploading to YouTube. You are being recorded. You have the right to remain silent, return to your vehicle and avoid further embarrassment or exposure to civil and/or criminal charges for unlawfully detaining, intimidating, threatening or otherwise harassing a citizen who is, according to the law of the land, innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Do you understand these rights as they have been read to you? Are you officially detaining me, officer? Am I free to go?
