When I taught my first yoga class at the WA State Reformatory last - TopicsExpress

When I taught my first yoga class at the WA State Reformatory last winter, there were only a dozen guys attending. My last four classes have had between 22 and 25 students. Today one of them said, Man, I need to stop telling people they need to come to yoga! Every single one of my students today had come to at least two classes previously. They are sticking with it and seeing the benefits. We get two full hours to explore breathwork, meditation, visualizations, and of course, many different asanas. The first time I taught, at one point, I asked the guys to move freely, to just let loose and roll around or breathe in whatever way called to them, and they all just stared at me, rigid and doubtful. Today, we had three periods of free movement and they looked like a bunch of beautiful animals. Its amazing to see how a little encouragement, guidance, and support can help those who may have never experienced consciously letting go, to dive into their bodies and breath, and begin to trust the process of their own unfolding. If you are a yoga teacher, consider attending Yoga Behind Bars teacher training this April 11-12. Or support us in any way that you can! Attend our fundraisers and community classes, like our facebook page, donate, spread the word. Blessings!
