When I teach, I always tell my students that ideas need to have the street test --that the lectures we have, the discussions we share, and the books we read wont really change the world or even us, in the end, unless the intellectual discourse can be tested in reality. Most of the ideas in my book, The (Un)Common Good have engaged the streets in the course of my life experience over several decades. I have tried to work and experiment with much of what is put forward here--in serious interaction and shoulder-to-shoulder struggle with many people who live very real lives in the very real world and are trying to change it.
