When I tell people Im still involved in my fraternity, most of my friends today think its one of the weirdest parts about me. Why, they ask, would YOU want to be in a fraternity? Heres a blog post on the MIT admissions site written by a current pledge at my chapter. We couldnt possibly be from more different backgrounds (Nigerian? Not me!), but 23 years after I pledged, hes saying the same things I did. Did I plan on joining a fraternity? No. Did I find a group of young men who supported me, taught me, helped me get through MIT, and helped me move from high school into the real world? I sure did.
