When I think of the groups of charitable organizations which actually go out into the community and meet the homeless where they live, I wonder just exactly what is the Austin City Council is trying to accomplish by building a statue. This reminds me of an old advertising campaign known as a "paper tiger." $175,000 could buy a considerable amount of food, clothing, and medicine for those who desperately need it. Do we really need a statue to raise awareness?! Or, do we need to support those organization (Mobile Loaves & Fishes, Austin Area Foodbank, etc.) who make an actual difference in the lives of those who both need and want help? Sure, the statue will be built with "private" funds. Still, those needing assistance will find little comfort from it on a cold day when they need a warm meal.
