When I think on it, the best of life is good conversation. The root meanings of the word suggest the phrase “to go about with.” Walking and talking and maybe stopping for a cup of coffee or a beer or to pause at a fine sight seems the ideal expression. A good conversation isn’t about fixed opinions derived from parents, churches, ideologies. It’s about getting at what makes sense to the heart and mind, given experience, thoughts, and the facts of life as they are known at the time. One can have a dialogue of sorts with a piece of writing, a piece of art or music, or the grace of natural wonders. But the back and forth aspect is limited and so such beauties and artifacts are limited and often await further discussion. One wants to share these things and to talk about them. So here is to all of those I have gone about with. Some are dead, some are missing, and some I will see and walk with again. But for all of you, if I did not take your hand at the time, it was the best of life and I was slow in reaching out. I know better now.
