When I told people I was going to the European Cadet Championships - TopicsExpress

When I told people I was going to the European Cadet Championships in Athens to watch, some of them asked why I was going all that way to watch judo. The reason was that I felt we had a real chance of bringing back some medals and I wanted to see it, I wanted my son to see it and I wanted to record some of it for posterity. Last years cadet squad and this years had some outstanding players among them, capable of competing at the highest level and in some cases with a little luck, capable of bringing home a Gold medal. I think its crucial for any sport to thrive, for the young kids coming through to have positive role models within the sport to try to emulate and this years crop of cadets had plenty. There has been a lot of bollox spoken recently about British judo being on its last legs with many on here reading it the last rites. While I think that judo is being dumbed down with regional officers more interested in inflating attendance figures with horrendous programs like judo fit than actually putting in place credible regional performance programs, with bona fide regional performance coaches, this years crop of cadets have proven to me that British Judo is far from dead and that the sharp end of the sport in this country is bearing fruit. (Whether that fruit is bore because of the system or despite it is another kettle of fish altogether :) It would be great to see some of this years cadets transition successfully to junior and seniors beyond that, will the new set up at Walsall help to achieve that.....Time will tell.....for now 1997 was a good year for the Roses. https://youtube/watch?v=bqJtLxe6FD4
