When I visited Namchi for the first time I happened to be in - TopicsExpress

When I visited Namchi for the first time I happened to be in Sumdups car. Its been nine ten years since Sumdup owns a car in this lone Tibetan settlement in Sikkim. He drives from Lal Bazzar to Namchi, and back again, covering forty miles in total. On the way Sumdup spoke about his settlement with a certain degree of pessimism. He said, I have been living in this place since I started acquiring what is called memory. And you are quite right, its a difficult place. What you could experience here is that you buried a kilo of potato and unearth only half of it. And that is as bad as that. Listening to Sumdup, I gazed on the road where local Indian women - both young and old - were breaking stones, dark skin, no tree merciful enough to give them any shade. And its noon, and I felt, how fortunate we were.
