When I want a new flower/vegetable bed free of weeds without using harmful chemicals & with minimal effort, I do the following: 1. In the fall I weedeat the grass to the dirt in the area I want my bed. 2. Rake up grass clippings. 3. Layer about 18-20 sheets of newspaper (dont use the glossy ads), this keeps the weeds from germinating. 4. Top with 2 1/2 feet of compost & soil mixture. 5. Let Winter do the work! In the Spring youll have a weed free bed that stays weed free & its ready to plant early! Ive been using this method for years & I love it! If your area isnt grassy it will work on dirt just as well with the added bonus of less work!
