When I was 12 I was diagnosed with clinical depression. I - TopicsExpress

When I was 12 I was diagnosed with clinical depression. I attempted suicide twice before I was 14 and It wasnt until I discovered Maya Angelou for myself that I found an outlet in poetry. I took a lot of her writing styles and replaced them with my own words until I found my own voice. I wrote inside of photo albums, I wrote on pieces of paper and hid them in nooks all around my moms house, I wrote in my text books and left them. Poetry pretty much was my saving grace. It wasnt until I got 18 that I learned of Maya Angelous singing and dance ability and I applied that to my own performances on stage. So no I dont know Ms Angelous book how the cage bird sings by heart or what city she was born in or every contribution she made to civil rights and Jim Crow laws, I just know what impact she made in my life, and that to me is legitimate. A lot of posts Ive seen are ppl slapping others in the face with yall dont even know her poems but you have not the first clue as to what they do know abt her and the impact she made on their lives. And what we all should know is that Maya Angelou stood against negativity and ignorance. Instead of trying to pull someone else down through passive aggressive social media , spend 10 minutes, have several seats, 5 clues, and look up three facts abt her and maybe YOULL find a reason to rejoice over her legacy and mourn the loss of a legend.
