When I was 29, I had just completed my teaching degree. I was a late bloomer as far as college goes. I was nervous about teaching high school. So I thought if i plunged myself in the roughest situation possible I could handle anything. So I started working in a facility with high risk (to the public) male offenders. Most of those young men were too far gone for any change, sadly, and ended up back in prison. On super bowl Sunday that year, I was bitten, stabbed and dodged a bullet. It was the best and most favorite job I have ever had. Two of the young men I worked with tracked me down just a few years back and told me I made a difference. They made more of a difference in my life than I did in theirs. Now, at 44, the children in my life are young. For the most part still innocent with a firm grasp on right and wrong. My teaching degree is spent on them. I am a poet, and a story teller. Not just in my writing but in my living room with Seuss and Skippey Jon Jones. The constant, though, is that they make much more of difference in my life than I do in theirs.
