When I was a child, my school often did events with another primary school. There was a boy at this particular school who for what ever reason, I hated. I hated the way he looked, they way he spoke, the way he carried himself and the way he interacted with other. A few years later I bumped into him at a party when I was about 16. I had a conversation with him and discovered that we had a lot in common. We both suffered depression, we both had similar experiences around this, and we both used being a clown as our main coping mechanism. A couple of years later I bumped into him again, this time at a gay bar. I look back on this now and cant help but think as a child, I recognised traits in him, that I loathed in myself. I projected my self hatred upon him and unjustly disliked him. I wonder how often people have been mistreated because an individual doesnt like something within themselves.
