“When I was a kid, I remember opening up a LIFE magazine and seeing a man named Jackson Pollock spilling paint all over a canvas. I thought, ‘Wow, that’s pretty cool!’,” says local artist Micheal O’Shell. Since then, O’Shell has been exploring new, original ways to present art to the world. Earlier this month, O’Shell—who specializes in ceramic sculpture—opened Stoneface Studio in Cahaba Heights, where the community can view, purchase, and create art. While O’Shell has been dreaming of opening his own studio for years, he came into his current space rather unexpectedly. “I used to be a bartender at a restaurant about a block away,” he explains. “So for three years, I drove by this spot. I always thought this would such a great space to open a studio.” When the space became available for rent, O’Shell immediately grabbed it off the market. “When I found out it was available, I was like ‘I’ll take it!’,” he laughs. O’Shell decided to introduce his studio to Birmingham with a gallery exhibit of his latest sculptures, a collection of quirky jellyfish sculptures he calls the Jellyfish Bones Research Society. “I just had a show at the Birmingham Art Crawl,” he explains. “I was at Johns City Diner with my jellyfish, and instead of putting them back into storage, I decided to bring them here and make it my first show.” The gallery will be on display at Stoneface Studio through November 30th. “It’s really tongue-in-cheek silliness,” says O’Shell of the unique exhibit. “There are at least 50 sculptures in the whole show.” In fact, it seems the show is the perfect representation of O’Shell’s own whimsical thinking as an artist. “I’m sort of like this silly, flexible, serious artist,” he says. “But the studio--it’s to promote art. The more art in Birmingham, the better.” We’ll be catching back up with Micheal O’Shell next Friday to learn more about Stoneface Studio.
