When I was a kid, wed travel from Long Island, where we lived, to Pittsburgh, where most of our relatives lived, for a two-week visit. A great deal of that trip took place on the Pennsylvania Turnpike between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, to me, one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the country. One of its most exotic features was the presence of seven tunnels through various mountains in western PA. In the 1960, as the Turnpike needed to be expanded, four of those tunnels were eliminated and three were abandoned, and the highway was rerouted. It is still a gorgeous ride, and I will be traveling it today as I travel back home to St. Louis, but I always miss the Sideling Hill, Rays Hill, and Laurel Hill Tunnels. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abandoned_Pennsylvania_Turnpike
