When I was a little girl, studying in Chandigarh at Carmel Convent - TopicsExpress

When I was a little girl, studying in Chandigarh at Carmel Convent ,for the two years or so that our father was posted in a location , found unsuitable for our education , my mother had her flock of four kids to handle all by herself . No doubt , that must have been a trying time for her . The older two siblings were certainly more of a support for her , i guess , as my brother had just joined college & the elder sister was in senior school , finishing her Senior Cambridge .She was studious & focussed towards becoming a doctor ... Which is what she went on to become , while my brother was the cause of my mothers high blood pressure as he was always hiding & reading Westerns & novels about the wild west. She found his books hidden in all sorts of places & was forever reporting him to dad .... But other than that he had no bad habits & drove mum around for all her chores . He was also the man in a house full of girls ! The brightest kid was my lil sis Komal , always topping her class & eventually becoming a Dr (a Phd in Psychology ) The one who was probably the biggest headache for our mother was me . Too playful & with a fiercely independent mind , I do believe i wasnt an easy kid to handle & back then , felt that my mom was always on my case . i was extremely spirited & also believed the world was waiting for me to arrive ... Without studying . I was good at a few things though , which only made my father very proud of me . He thought i was quite an artist & had his artistic bent of mind .... I had common interests as him , interior designing , gardening , painting .... Of course when the time came for me to leave the nest they were afraid to send me to the JJ School of Art which i had set my heart on , nor did they let me pursue Journalism .... I dont blame them ... These were all diploma courses .... so my mothers great desire to send me to the famous Home Science College was fulfilled . I completed the 3yrs ( getting married just before the final 3rd yr papers but did write my exam). My buddy Gurpreet Kaur( Mano ) now on Fb with me ,may or may not recall how she went through some of the subjects with me to help me prepare for the papers . All these memories were stirred today when i folded & put away Abdos starched turbans & he said that nobody folds them better than you. i thought back of my mother & how strict she was with us about neatness & tidying of our individual spaces . She threw out stuff from our cupboards if they werent neat .... We had to do dusting in turns ,washing our bicycles , making our beds , polishing our shoes .... Everything . This at the time when our dad was a senior army officer with all the perks that accompanied his status . It is to her credit that all of us turned out very house proud & good managers of our homes , even my sisters who became very successful professionals ! Well done mum .... I did make you proud of me !
