When I was a teenager, ours hung on the living room wall. It was the only phone in the house, and having a relatively short cord, it prevented the person holding the receiver from traveling to another area for privacy. Of course, there was no room noise to interfere with communication, for everyone in the room was silent in order to hear half of the conversation. And there was no television noise to interfere, for we three kids grew up without a television; in fact, my parents didnt own a television until 1998, well after all the kids had left home. These days, Mother has a cell phone, but the television receives only two stations, so they watch the news and Wheel of Fortune.
