When I was a wee lad,one day when I saw a rainbow standing on the slab near the old house looking northeast along the alleyway, I exclaimed to my father I see the lines!!, I see the Lines!! well maybe I did and maybe I didnt .. much like Lowells Martian canals. I was looking for the lines between the 7 unique colours of the rainbow. Rainbows for children are always drawn with distinct lines. They always have 7 colours. Yet it is an interesting question that I surf upon from time to time. We all know there are seven colours in the rainbow .. this is from the Greeks who thought seven was a nifty number. .. tell that to the ancient chinese who thought there were five .. and the Japanese who thought there were ten. Colour is on the X chromosome. Most men have 1, Most women have 2, and sometimes women with a mutated X can kick in more eye colour cones. So Most animals are dichromats (2 cones) seeing about 10,000 colors., most humans are trichomat (3 cones) at a million colours, a select few tetrachromat (4 cones) can see a hundred million colors .. and they now have a computer aided test..Sitting in a dark room, peering into a lab device, women saw three colored circles flash before their eyes. To a trichromat, they all looked the same. To a tetrachromat, though, one would stand out. That circle was not a pure color but a subtle mixture of red and green light randomly generated by a computer. Only a tetrachromat would be able to perceive the difference, thanks to the extra shades made visible by her fourth cone..
