When I was a young lad, and I wanted to fashion myself into a newspaper writer/columnist, I would voraciously read three writers: Bob Greene, Jayson Stark, and Jimmy Breslin (later, my buddy James Clark too.) Jimmy Breslin, to me, was the master. And heres an example: He needed a column after JFK died. Does he pick low-hanging fruit, do the usual? No, he profiles the guy who was called to dig JFKs grave. Its a short column, but one rich with tone, imagery, and connection. THIS is what writing is all about. Heres the piece: arlingtoncemetery.net/digging-grave-an-honor.htm
