When I was around 11YO I was recruited into Habonim at the S.E. Hebrew Congregation in S.E. D.C. Frank and Mary May, my maternal grandparents were charter members. I didnt know them, they died when I was 2YO. It was a sibling bickering family. It was during the depression and then Pearl Harbor. The whole world was about homicidal suicide warfare as far as I was concerned. The group established at the shul was Kvutza Kinnereth. I was voted the Rosh and led the meetings. I was instructed to start each meeting with a short list of questions and the rest of the little girls responded with the appropriate responses. The one question that got me thinking was: Why should Jews go to Israel and no other country. Im glad for that. I was already being taught in public school by my wonderful teachers to question everything. They had the freedom because the Principal was the Principal of 3 elementry schools so my teachers had the freedom to teach us to be our own brains. In the second grade Ethel Shulman(sp?) who later became Weiss, taught us rapid reading and how all newspaper opinions were presented. The headlines was for people who never went below the headlines, the front text under the headlines were for those who went a little further. The truth was presented to those who took time to continue. When Becky was growing up I could never understand why she insisted on reading the last page of any book first. Its just recently I put 2 and 2 together!! She just naurally knew this. So as a Zionist I followed Jew-hating and Black-jhating all myu life.
