When I was growing up, December 5th was a special day. It marked the eve of the feast of St. Nicholas. On that evening we would hang our stockings; the girls in our family had to wear long brown stockings supported by a garter belt. Today they would be fashionable--they werent back then. On the morning of St, Nicholas feast day those stockings would be filled with peanuts in their shells--then the long stockings served a good purpose. Many years ago St. Nicholas also brought us a baby sister--Ann Cecilia. The doctor was impressed with her hands and suggested that she be named for the saint that played the piano(?) or the harp (?) Ann was the sixth child in our family. The first year Marion and i were married, I hung a stocking just in memory of days gone by. I didnt expect anything in it, but my brother Cash came in at some point and filled it. Cash went on to become a police officer; he died of cancer the same year Jimmy was killed. Ann went on to become the chairman of the Department of Medical Technology at the University of Pittsburg, has her doctorate in Public Health, and is now happily married and living in Tecumseh. She has learned to play the piano and is a talented artist. Happy, blessed birthday, Ann. I appreciate the special gift of St. Nicholas.
