When I was growing up in Lawrence, Kansas we had a street merchant - TopicsExpress

When I was growing up in Lawrence, Kansas we had a street merchant by the name of Leo Beurerman. He repaired watches and sold pencils, erasers, and other small items from his peddlers cart. What made Leo so special was he was a crippled dwarf, deaf and partially blind! Children were his best customers and even in the middle of July, when the last thing on anyones mind was writing something, wed need to buy a pencil from Shorty. A documentary was made on his life and I remember watching it in Junior High. There is a plaque in the sidewalk on Massachusetts Street that honors him. Leo died at the County Nursing Home in 1974. Leo taught a whole generation of children about compassion and I can safely say we all loved him. Remembering this remarkable man and his beautiful spirit. Rest in Peace dear Shorty. youtu.be/dqdkCFIvfjk
