When I was growing up (read: formative years), all my favorite - TopicsExpress

When I was growing up (read: formative years), all my favorite artists released ALBUMS. You would buy the album, obsess over it for a few months, and then eagerly await their next release, which would typically take 1-3 years. In the meantime theyd stay relevant with music videos, interviews, shows, and youd discover other artists through who they shouted out or featured on. Now the model is much more of a constant-content feed -- release and push singles one at a time instead of packaging them together. Personally, as an artist, Im SO much more comfortable and at home with the former model. I love crafting albums as standalone pieces, because thats how I learned to see my inspirations work. Heres the rub -- am I screwing myself by being this way? Should I be releasing dozens of tracks I dont reeeeallly like to stay relevant, or is it OK that Im planning to bide my time and release one album about every 2 years that represents my ideal at the time? Because thats how I am. So even if Im screwed in that my last 2 LPs dont represent where Im currently at at all, I get to put all my energy into ONE all-consuming project. Id rather lose myself like that. Thoughts?
