When I was in Chinese medicine school we had a patient who had been a soldier in this war. He was still a young man when he came to us in 2000. How much younger he must have been when he was shot through the neck. We could see very clearly the entry wound on the back of his neck, just to the right of center, and the larger exit wound on the front, near his collar bone. After being shot he had been held in a prison where he was beaten daily for six months and had all of his bones broken multiple times. He was quiet. I would say taciturn, except that the grief and numbness were impossible to miss. He spent his days caring for his young niece. When I was twelve I asked, What is it to be human? Apparently, this is part of it.
