When I was in Cuba the major problem with the internet was the fact that, due to the illegal US blockade, Cuba cant access the web easily. Venezuela had just put up a satellite before we arrived and that allowed one single feed into Cuba. The data feed was extremely slow, which meant that people with computers simply couldnt use them effectively. We visited the Antonio Núñez Jiménez Foundation For Nature and Humanity in Havana, which is a wonderful Permaculture research establishment. They had one computer with internet access. Everyone on staff was rostered to a single hour per week to read and answer their e-mails. If they missed their rostered time due to pressure of work, they missed out until the next week. Those are the sorts of daily, petty frustrations and pressures that the blockade is designed to produce. It is meant to frustrate people until they lash out against the government. The Cuban government is certainly guilty of all sorts of bureaucratic deformations and shortcomings, and also of corruption. However, the root cause is the illegal blockade. Only after the blockade is lifted can any legitimate criticisms be levelled at the Cuban government. Because, until the blockade is lifted nobody can realistically judge which problems are caused by the government and how many by the US.
