When I was in college in the 1960s I visited the Green Bank National Radio Astronomy Observatory in West Virginia. (See pictures in comment below). One of the purposes of the HUGE Observatory is to detect radio waves emitted in the universe. In other words one purpose is to detect radio waves from anyone out there who might like us be sending out waves trying to find anyone out there like them.
