When I was in high school a million years ago during the last throes of the Cold War, politically correct was used sarcastically, ironically, to make fun of ideas that were painfully mainstream and in the box. Remember, this was the era of Orwellian prophecy-come-to-life, and we used it to mean Newspeak, for all intents and purposes. Then somewhere along the line, probably the early 90s, it started to be said unironically. And then it became malignant. But just when you thought it couldnt get any worse, here comes this new notion of emphatic correctness and trigger warnings and protecting us all from ourselves. Welcome to a land where misery is the coin of the realm, and just how easy you are to offend or cause to have some kind of episode is a measure of how much power you hold. I look forward to the day when strength is valued again and where we are more than the sum of how many times we have been victimized or how much attention it gains us.
