When I was in my early composition studies in the 1970s at Juilliard the Beethoven string quartets were an important inspiration to me. His very fine Op. 18 no. 1 shows what the early Beethoven did with the classical tradition of Haydn and Mozart before he expanded classical form into larger scale compositions which expressed a new intensity that influenced the Romantic composers of the 19th century. I think that while this is primarily a classical period composition, the new intensity and power that was to become so important to Beethovens later work is already present at times here. https://youtube/watch?v=n9EQSakGvuQ
