When I was just shy of 6 years old, I made a radio. Anyone can do it. You just wind some magnet wire on a toilet paper tube. Steal your big sisters clear nail polish to lock it in place. Than grab a safety pin and point it at a little chunk of gallium crystal. Next: hang a 100-foot wire out the window. Find an outdoor faucet for the other wire. You could tune it to one of two stations: KGW or KISN. Both AM radio stations at the time. Both played R&B so i could learn to rhyme. Dad helped me get a pair of aviators headphones. Theyre so sensitive you dont need a battery to run the thing. All night long, the sounds of Dobie Gray, Little Stevie Wonder, Aaron Neville, Aretha Franklin, The Supremes, James Brown, Sam & Dave, Gladys Knight and the Pips filled my head. Memorizing lyrics in my sleep, my verbiage had a cadence that came straight from the Soul. And now? Now Olivia Dae is walking the gritty streets of NYC.
