When I was stationed on Kwajalien down in the Marshall islands - TopicsExpress

When I was stationed on Kwajalien down in the Marshall islands you were allowed to ware civilian cloths on the week end if you had some. They didn’t sell them in the ship store , but you could order them by mail from Battleship Max Cohen out of Honolulu, which every one did. It would take a couple of weeks for them to get there though . Swede shoes and belts were popular items. One of guys waited a bout a month for his shoes, first shipment was the wrong size so he reordered . And all you heard was just wait till his new shoes got there and how sharp he was going to look in his gaberdine slacks, Swede shoes and matching belt and a Hawaiian shirt and his Humphy Bogart hat.. They finally got there and he did look sharp. He went over to the EM club and got drunk, came back to quarters and laid down in bed with a cigarette in his hand. He fell a sleep and dropped the cigarette in his shoe and started a fire, . The smell of burning Swede hide is terrible. The guy on watch grabbed the fire hose and just soaked him and his bunk, Naturally the gaberdine pants he was waring where ruined along with his shoes. Then to make matters worst he was wrote up for violating the no smoking in bed rule So much for looking sharp out in the middle of no where.
