When I was young I would visit my maternal grandma and every time I went to her house, there was an old lady pleading on behalf of her daughter that a specific uncle of mine should marry the daughter. These ladies were mostly beautiful and being my most favorite uncle, I remember asking him why so many ladies flocked around him despite that other handsome men abound. My uncle still had a small grass-thatched house in his fathers compound (what the Luos call Simba) but from all indications, he was ambitious and doing well. Having nice seats and music system in ones house was a preserve for just a few least of all, a young man in his thirties. Of course my uncle ended up being a polygamist and hes doing quite well economically with all the wives having big permanent houses and just about what they need. But it is what he told me that I agree with, it is timeless, Wuod nyamera, when you grow old, youd understand that the most handsome man is an ambitious man. Ladies would want to settle down with that man. And not that my uncle wasnt handsome, hes still the most charming man Ive ever seen.
