When I was younger and choosing a career, the thing I wanted most was unpredictability. I never wanted to do the same old/same old, day in and day out. Ive changed my mind. Yesterdays installment in the new and different category was a bit much, even for me. Stick a fork in me, peoples, because I am done! Ive seen kitties abandoned in locked houses to die. Ive seen cats thrown out in subzero temperatures to freeze and starve. Ive seen people drive away and leave their blind cat on the porch of their house with a case of food she couldnt open. God help me, Ive seen kittens flung out of speeding cars onto the expressway. Well, I saw a new one yesterday. And while it isnt on the level of the expressway atrocity it was still enough to make me scratch my head and wonder WTF???. We were in full garage sale mode when we got a call from the manager of a local grocery store. She was upset and near tears. Somebody had zipped 2 kittens into a canvas bag, put the bag into a shopping cart, and parked the cart in their parking lot cart corral, where it had spent the past couple of hours baking in the sun and being hit by other shopping carts as shoppers sent them into the corral. Finally somebody had noticed the bag, opened it, and found two overheated and skinny kittens. Of course the store manager called one of the more prominent area shelters, where she was told she could drop the kittens off, but they would probably be put down. One of the cashiers told her about West Side Cats, and Sid and Nancy arrived at the shelter within the hour. They were given a big bowl of food and a soft bed. Eating came easily for them, holding still for the camera is obviously a skill they havent mastered. Still, for two babies who came close to dying in a canvas sauna just yesterday, their level of trust and pure sweetness is amazing. So... for whoever found this novel approach to disposing of their pets, thank you for curing me of my love of the unpredictable. And, oh yeah, youre a jackass, too.
