When I went back, in 2009, to take some courses at University of Texas at San Antonio, I was sure that, by now, the American college lecture auditorium would be a fully digitized, space-age, computerized, slick-as-a-tit, rock n roll teaching environment. I figured the kids themselves, raised in our brave new world, wouldve insisted upon it. Not so: they had this dimwitted TA onstage who could barely talk, with a cheap bad microphone, dim crackling, squawking speakers, and dim, baleful-yellow overhead projector that one could barely read. I literally could not make head-nor-tail of most of the lectures. I was so surprised and disappointed. Why was this lecture hall still so technically 1970s-backwards.... in 2009? Id thought UTSA was rich.
