When I went to Harvard, I wanted to be a mathematician/physicist. - TopicsExpress

When I went to Harvard, I wanted to be a mathematician/physicist. I took some of the toughest math/physics classes at Harvard and made a lot of friends in those fields. Then I did more CS because I realized I can work with more interesting systems (to me) instead of working on physics stuff. But then I got interested in stuff like economics and policy. But as I went through my Harvard career, I realized that Harvard is not about the top education you get, it is about the network you get access to and it is the friendships you create. I have friends/roommates who already built and sold their stratups, are already world renowned music composer, planning to run for presidents (in a couple of countries), and all of these people are in the same place. This is an unparalleled privilege that you get at Harvard, which would be tough to get elsewhere. And I would not mention the alum network-- even this winter when I was working in Bd, I realized how powerful and well connected Harvard network is. I dont have a first hand experience of taking classes elsewhere (except MIT, where I cross registered), and I think the quality of education would be very similar in the top 10 colleges. So if I wanted to be the physicist I originally wanted to be I could as well be that. But I have a feeling that this unparalleled network of smart and passionate people who were born to be the rock-stars in their respective fields is what makes Harvard--Harvard. — Tarik Adnan Moon, Harvard Class of 2015 ^ Just makes me more and more willing to attend Harvard someday.
