When I went to lunch today I was in the process of coming to peace with the counsel Id received to put Jake down. I decided to call Michelle Preston, who first found Jake on death row many years ago now. She said that if she were to make that decision, she needed to talk with the surgeon, Dr Au, first. By three oclock, Michelle called me back and said if it was her decision then she would take her chances with operating. I drove straight to the clinic to meet Dr Au. He didnt want to be pinned down and went over my options, all of them filled with potential pitfalls. But remembering Michelles advice I signed the forms and paid the money and off Jake went to pre-op. Later this evening, Jake had come through surgery with flying colors. Now the next couple of days are going to be pretty difficult and there are many land mines to avoid, but that said, I want to thank Michelle Preston, Dr Au, Olivia and Justin Stelter, Mindy Tate, Russell W. Hooper III, Dane Carder, Joel Carol Jimerson Tomlin, Deborah Katherine Lovett and all of you who kept Jake in your prayers and thoughts though out it all and all of you who wrote such kind and encouraging words. Hes pretty drowsy tonight. His tongue hanging out of his mouth, he looks like he broke into Mindy Tates stash of Battlefield Bourbon with a reckless abandon. He will be hospitalized for several days, but should be coming home soon. These have been two of my roughest days in recent memory. I want to thank each of you again and again.
