When I worked with Amigos de Las Americas in the Dominican - TopicsExpress

When I worked with Amigos de Las Americas in the Dominican Republic six years ago (gosh Im getting old!) they told us all something never forget. To hell with good intentions. At first I reacted strongly to this, even rejected it. It seemed pessimistic, defeated, almost exclusive. Only the perfect volunteer, with all the knowledge in the world and mastery of cultural sensitivity could actually do good. Everyone else might want to help but how much good would they actually be doing? How much harm? Its a question that even today I battle with because there is no perfect volunteer. But at the same time, I agree. Good intentions are simply not enough! Check out this article and tell me what you think. How do we as public health majors address the issues that arise from not knowing the consequences of good intentions? How do we prevent this (if you even think we can)? Hope week two is treating you all well. Cheers and see you all soon! ++++
